Why Teal for the Ovarian Cancer Ribbon Colour?

Why Teal for the Ovarian Cancer Ribbon Colour?

Teal is used as the colour for ovarian cancer awareness ribbons. Ovarian cancer symptoms can be very subtle or unclear which makes it easy to miss, hence a bright and vibrant teal coloured ribbon is used to bring awareness to the disease. As the teal colour has been used throughout the years to raise awareness for ovarian cancer, getting dressed up in teal and wearing an ovarian cancer teal ribbon is a simple but effective way to spark meaningful conversations.

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is quite a prevalent disease in Australia and is the ninth most diagnosed cancer in females. Every year an estimated number of around 1800 new cases of ovarian cancer is diagnosed in Australia. Symptoms for ovarian cancer are vague and there is also no early detection test for ovarian cancer, most cases are only diagnosed at an advanced stage which makes it difficult to treat. Therefore, it was estimated that ovarian cancer patients only have less than half a chance of surviving five years. Hence, Teal Ribbon Day is an important day to raise awareness and support those affected by ovarian cancer.

It is vital to monitor for Ovarian cancer symptoms which may include:

  • Abdominal bloating
  • Feeling full very quickly
  • Weight loss
  • Discomfort in the pelvic area
  • Tiredness
  • Back pain
  • Bowel habit changes
  • Frequent urination

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month/Day

In Australia, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is in February and Teal Ribbon Day is held every year on the last Wednesday of February. Meanwhile, the world ovarian cancer awareness day is on May 8th.

During Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month there are many ways to get involved and support those affected. Ovarian Cancer Australia runs several events such as the annual Teal Ribbon Parliamentary Breakfast where women affected by the disease can share their stories. To raise money to support those affected by ovarian cancer, people can host a Teal Tea event or donate on Giving Day.

You can also fundraise or donate to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation to drive vital research into treatment options, managing recurrence, early detection tests, prevention, and cures for ovarian cancer.
